Getting up once or twice a night to go to the toilet is annoying but quite normal. Plus, it’s starting to get annoying! Fortunately, there are solutions, explains Professor François Desgrandchamps. From the age of 50, about 80% of people get up once a night to urinate, and about 40% twice, says Prof. Desgrandchamps. It’s not serious but embarrassing. Beyond that (or if it bothers you to get up every night), there are a few measures to take to limit this nocturnal polyuria or pollakiuria, as they are called.
To determine the cause, and therefore the measures to be taken, this is the first question to be asked. In general, you know if you get up to urinate a lot (polyuria) or very little (pollakiur). “For 24 hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. the next morning, urinate in a measuring cup and measure the amount each time,” advises Prof. Desgrandchamps.
