The Meaning Behind the Small Fish Symbol Seen on Some Cars

If you’ve ever been stuck in traffic or parked in a lot and noticed a small, simple fish symbol on the back of someone’s  car, you might have wondered: What does it mean?

Far from being just a random decoration, this little emblem carries a meaningful message that’s been around for decades.

1. It’s Called the “Ichthys”

The small fish symbol is formally known as the Ichthys (pronounced “ick-thus”), from the Greek word for fish. Early Christians used it as a secret symbol during times of persecution. It allowed them to identify each other without revealing their faith to outsiders.

The symbol itself is simple: two intersecting arcs forming the outline of a fish.
