Heavy waves, choppy water, a harbor basin turned into a death trap. Two days later, rescue workers made a tragic discovery. The man was recovered lifeless from the water. Certainty arrived – and with it, profound shock.

Now it has been revealed who has died.

It has now become clear who the deceased was: Gerhard Augstein died during a boat trip in Greece. The long-time SWR4 radio host drowned in the harbor of Agios Nikolaos on the island of Crete.

Augstein was particularly well-known for many years through his radio program “Kurpfalz Radio lässt grüßen” (Greetings from Kurpfalz Radio), which made him a familiar face in everyday life for many. He officially retired from professional life in 2018 – but he never completely withdrew from storytelling and sharing his knowledge.
