🚗 2. Transport: why costs will increase in 2026
🛣️ 2.1 Higher motorway tolls
From 1 January 2026, the adjustment of tolls to inflation came into force for almost all Italian motorway concessions.
📌 The average increase is about +1.5 %, but on some specific routes (e.g. Salerno-Pompeii-Naples) it exceeds 1.9 %.
Adjustment to inflation: the law provides that tolls are indexed to price developments. This is an automatic mechanism provided for in the concession contracts.
Constitutional Court ruling: the government had tried to block increases in the past, but a ruling on 14 October 2025 annulled the rules postponing adjustments, giving the green light to price increases.
👉 Impact: This increase is not dramatic in percentage terms, but it affects everyone who travels frequently — especially commuters, freight companies and freelancers who use their cars for work.
⛽ 2.2 Fuels: excise duties and prices at the pump
One of the most relevant and discussed innovations of 2026 concerns the alignment of excise duties on petrol and diesel.
